-Synopsis-

Greek actress  Vasso Georgiadou stars as “Anna”, a young woman whose traumatic experiences in Athens result a journey to her Scottish boyfriend and cosy office job in Glasgow. But as new acquaintances trigger painful memories and new disturbing episodes, Anna fears a loosening grip on reality as the past proves difficult to escape in this British indie psychological thriller.

AnnaUnboundstill1For his feature film directorial debut German writer/director/producer Bernd Porr, who fascinatingly moonlights as an electronic engineer as well as scientist and Scottish university academic; brings us a micro-budget indie drama/thriller about the perils of escaping from your past and the scarring psychological effects of traumatic experiences.

‘Anna Unbound’ is a powerful little indie which retains a mystery element throughout, we’re never really certain what’s real and what is a harrowing construct of Anna’s psyche; and whether by circumstance or design, director Porr is rather vague about Anna and her past, allowing us to speculate on whether the events in Athens created her fractured state of mind or if there was some pre-existing element of paranoid schizophrenia.

The film builds slowly as Anna tries to adapt to a new life in a relatively new culture, but things soon take a turn towards the sinister as the psychological thriller element kicks in. The story flows in an abstract sort of way and deals with serious themes like sexual assault and the notion of consent while under the influence. But the vague nature of the story persists and Porr doesn’t wrap everything up in a neat little package, leaving Anna forced to confront her own demons and fears rather than escaping them.

After multiple shorts over the last several years; Bernd Porr has crafted a solid and effective indie drama as his feature debut, thanks largely to an evocative original score and his now frequent collaborator Vasso Georgiadou in the lead role, a powerful and  nuanced performance from a talent we hope to see more of in future.
