Based on a true story and set in the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1980s Texas, this is the story of Ron Woodroof a rough living Texas good ole boy whose life is turned upside down upon contracting the HIV virus. Ron finds ways, both legal and otherwise, to go around the US government systems to get unapproved drugs into Texas and treat needy patients while making a tidy profit while he can.
This is an engaging story of dignity in suffering and its power to change and is grounded in reality by a standout performance from Matthew McConaughey, his unsympathetic and grounded portrayal of Woodroof leaves the audience identifying and sympathising with him and his plight while not feeling sorry for the man.
McConaughey’s best actor wins in virtually every award ceremony this award is richly deserved not only for the commitment to the role exemplified by the physically transforming weight loss of nearly 50lbs, but for the manner in which he portrays a character given a certain death sentence as it would have been at that time, with a since of energy, rough charm and purpose.
There should also be a mention for Jared Leto’s performance as Woodroof’s transvestite confidant and fellow AIDS sufferer Rayon, equally successful at most of this year’s awards.
Dallas Buyers Club is a must see film for those looking for an interesting and compelling alternative to Hollywood blockbusters and romantic comedies this year.
