You might not think that a movie about a popular children’s toy franchise would be full of satirical humour and social commentary but The Lego Movie is a CG Animation epic that surprises and entertains on multiple levels.
At its core this is a family fantasy adventure with a linear good vs. evil and oppressed vs. oppressor storyline sitting in the Lego universe that is only limited by the imagination of a child playing with the popular toy.
It becomes more interesting to the adult viewer as we see the constant character crossover from movie franchises like Batman and Superman of DC, Lord of the Rings and Marvel Superheroes, and is underpinned by universal themes of government control and the stifling of creativity and individualism.
Add to that social commentary and satirical humour and great voiceover performances by Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson amongst others, the result is a surprisingly enjoyable and fulfilling movie experience for any child and grownup and perhaps the greatest commercial for a toy company ever made.
