Based on the autobiographies of legendary larger-than-life Australian criminal and now bestselling author Mark “Chopper” Read, Chopper paints a brutal but darkly comic picture of the life of a man as comfortable with television crews as he was brutalising drug-dealers and prison inmates.
Featuring the considerable talents of Eric Bana as Chopper in his breakout dramatic role, the story jumps around from past to present in a Tarantino-like visual style and features a brand of sharp and direct dialogue as only the Aussies can deliver.
This is clearly not a film for the faint-hearted but despite the graphic violence and strong language Chopper is not a particularly hard watch and it’s the comedy and delivery from Bana in particular that makes the greatest impression, Chopper easily rivals any American or British film for best comedy-gangster movie of the noughties.
