Directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt), Nebraska stars Bruce Dern in an Oscar nominated performance as Woody Grant, an alcoholic elderly man driving his small town family to despair with his obsession with getting to Nebraska to claim his supposed 1million dollar Mega Sweepstakes magazine price.
Woody seems to display characteristics of dementia and coupled with his alcoholism it makes him a handful for his sons and acid-tongued wife, ultimately though this is a man in the twilight of his life with nothing to do who recruits his doting son on a road trip to Nebraska where we there is more than meets the eye about Woody.
Nebraska is a quirky and touching story about ageing, redemption and the relationship between a father and son, beautifully layered with comedy and pathos and strong central performances by Bruce Dern and June Squibb as Woody’s wife.
If you were a fan of Sideways and The Descendants we strongly recommend Alexander Payne’s latest film as one of the hidden comedy jewels of the year.
