The ever intense Tom Hardy plays a concrete construction manager driving through the motorways of the UK to do the right thing in his eyes while risking his family, career and everything he has worked hard to achieve in the process.
Written and directed by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises), Locke is largely a one-man-show with the title character driving through the entire film and having psychologically dramatic dialogue with the significant people in his life through his mobile phone.
Tom Hardy’s performance is typically strong but subtle, despite a questionable Welsh accent, and the film itself is an original and considered psychological drama, however it can become slightly tedious without a great pay-off so don’t expect some British Gangster-thriller as the film’s name and lead actor might suggest.
Writer-turned-director Steven Knight remains one of the more original and effective British auteurs in dealing with contemporary British life, although not as compelling as some of his previous work Locke is a worthwhile watch on limited release in the cinema or on DVD and streaming soon.
