The Late, Great Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a German spy in modern day Hamburg on the trail of a young illegal Chechen immigrant whom he believes is involved in the global “War on Terror”.
Based on the John le Carré (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) novel and in a similar measured tone and style, A Most Wanted Man lacks the stylistic qualities of a period story like Tinker Tailor but has a far more contemporary value in the way that it depicts the complexities of international intelligence operations and the people inevitably caught up in their web.
Despite the interesting subject matter this film does disappoint with its lack of urgency, it seems that the movie is completely detached from the thriller elements of the novel and the audience may not get what they might expect from an espionage drama, even one authored by Le Carré.
Leaving the negatives aside, A Most Wanted Man is certainly not lacking in subtlety and intelligence and is engaging enough story-wise to be worth watching, the strong cast alone is worth the price of admission as is the chance to see one of the finest actors of his or any other generation in one of his final films.
