Set in the late 90’s, Liam Neeson stars as a tough New York ex-cop turned private investigator hired by a drug-lord to track down the men who kidnapped and brutally murdered his wife, things quickly take a darker turn than a simple kidnapping-gone-wrong.
At first glance this film might seem like a continuation of Neeson’s recent theme of “action man taking on bad guys” typified by the Taken series but A Walk Among the Tombstones is a more considered and dark mystery Thriller, clearly writer/director Scott Frank has taken a cue from David Fincher’s considerable contributions to the genre in Se7en and Zodiac.
Despite the dark interesting tones and dark psychological subject matter, the mystery element of this murder-mystery quickly evaporates and we are left with a straight detective drama with characters you ultimately know and care little about.
A Walk Among the Tombstones is not without merit though and is still interesting and engaging enough to keep you hooked until an ultimately satisfying if predictable conclusion, certainly recommended if you are a Liam Neeson fan and want to see something different before we are treated to Taken 3 next year.
