A big city writer and his wife are forced to move back to his small-town roots to the detriment of their marriage only to find that his wife goes missing and is presumed dead, he is then considered a prime suspect in a crime which becomes a national media frenzy but things are not as they seem in this complex drama.
Director David Fincher proves once again that he is the modern master of the dark dramatic-thriller with a beautifully crafted and stylish film, Gone Girl is gripping from the start and never lets the audience go until a typically unexpected and thought-provoking conclusion.
Ben Affleck delivers what is probably his most accomplished performance proving that in middle-age he has reached the next level of acting ability and makes us all a lot more comfortable with his upcoming donning of the Dark Knight Cape in Batman v Superman in 2016.
Gone Girl benefits from an accomplished script from Gillian Flynn and masterful direction by Fincher but is truly anchored by a subtle, multidimensional and Oscar meriting performance by Rosamund Pike as the “Gone Girl” herself.
Touching on themes of media manipulation and the complexities of marriage, you are unlikely to see a better dramatic thriller anytime soon, that is of course until David Fincher decides to contribute to the genre once again. Gone Girl is one of the prime “must see films” of 2014.
