Ben & Sera in “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995)

Based on the semi-autobiographical book by tragic author John O’Brien, Nicolas Cage (Raising Arizona, The Rock) delivers an Oscar-winning performance as a suicidal alcoholic who takes one last Vegas trip to drink himself to death, only to meet a prostitute (Elisabeth Shue) with whom he forms a bizarre but touching relationship in this romantic and tragic award-winning drama.

In a truly tragic twist the author John O’Brien, on whose book the film is based, committed suicide weeks after production on the film had begun, it’s thought that he was unhappy with the editorial changes to his work and his father stated that the book itself was written as a suicide note.

Directed by Mike Figgis and starring Nicolas Cage, Elisabeth Shue & Julian Sands among others.
