Denzel Washington in ‘The Hurricane’ (1999)

thehurricane_146x216thehurricanstill001Denzel Washington stars in a dramatization of the life of former middleweight contender Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who was falsely convicted of a 1966 triple murder and served nearly 20 years before an unlikely relationship and legal effort led to the overturning of his conviction on the grounds of racial discrimination.

Despite the fact that ‘The Hurricane’ is a dramatization and riddled with inaccuracies, Washington’s tour-de-force central performance holds the film together and is not only impressive in the dramatic scenes but also in the few that take place in the ring .

Washington trained for over a year with former pro-boxer Terry Claybon, who also played one of “The Hurricane’s” opponents in the film and incidentally trained Jake Gyllenhaal for the upcoming ‘Southpaw’, the result was a lean Denzel Washington who not only looked the part but managed to convincingly combine his own orthodox boxing skills with Rubin Carter’s viscous hooks and aggressive power-punching style.

Directed by Norman Jewison and starring Denzel Washington, Vicellous Reon Shannon and Deborah Unger among others.

Genre: Fact-based, Drama
