The final Sunday in February saw the ever expanding awards season come to a climax at the 88th annual Academy Awards in Hollywood California, although all film & art awards are subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win or be nominated, this was a chance for films and their filmmakers to be globally recognized for another great year of work.
As expected ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ led the field and picked up the majority of the more technical awards, Leonardo DiCaprio finally broke his media-hyped supposed Oscar curse by winning the lead actor award while Brie Larson picked up lead actress.
In fact there were no real surprises this year apart from the big one with the excellent church abuse journalistic exposé ‘Spotlight’ taking best picture. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki became a member of a very exclusive club by winning for‘The Revenant’ and making it 3 consecutive Oscars for him, while Alejandro González Iñárritu’s makes it 3 wins in a row for Mexican directors by taking the golden idol for the same film.
Let’s take a look at the night’s nominees and big winners, as well as our picks:
