In keeping with tradition, the 60th London Film Festival culminated with a small prize ceremony, here are this year’s winners.

 

Best Film (Official Competition)

Certain Women

lff2016articlepic-39Writer/director Kelly Reichardt’s nuanced drama set in small-town Montana where the lives of three women intersect as they try to make their way in the world, starring  Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern among others.

 

 

Sutherland Award- Best First Feature

lff2016articlepic-40Writer/director Julia Ducournau was in attendance to pick up her award for teen coming-of-age French horror ‘Raw’: the darkly humorous and disturbing story of a young woman whose hunger for flesh is awakened by her college experiences in this dark fable debut.

 

 

Grierson Award- Best Documentary

Starless Dreams (Royahaye Dame Sobh)

lff2016articlepic-41Producer Nasrine Medard de Chardon was on hand to accept the award on behalf of director Mehrdad Oskouei, for this Iranian documentary about the young “residents” of a “Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre” for girls, and the circumstances which make them some of the most marginalised people in Iranian society.

 

 

Best Short Film Award

9 days: From My Window in Aleppo

lff2016articlepic-42Photographer and director Issa Touma picked up his award for the documentary short filmed from his window in downtown Aleppo, capturing changing events in an uprising within the context of a horrendous and protracted Syrian civil war, with major consequences for the region and the wider world.

 

 

BFI Fellowship

lff2016articlepic-43This year’s awards ceremony culminated with the presenting of the highest award the BFI can bestow, the Fellowship. Actor Michael Fassbender was on hand to present the prestigious prize to his collaborator and friend, Turner Prize-winning visual artist turned Academy Award-winning director/producer Steve McQueen, for his contribution to filmmaking.
