Producer Nasrine Medard de Chardon was on hand to accept the award on behalf of director Mehrdad Oskouei, for this Iranian documentary about the young “residents” of a “Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre” for girls, and the circumstances which make them some of the most marginalised people in Iranian society.

Photographer and director Issa Touma picked up his award for the documentary short filmed from his window in downtown Aleppo, capturing changing events in an uprising within the context of a horrendous and protracted Syrian civil war, with major consequences for the region and the wider world.

This year’s awards ceremony culminated with the presenting of the highest award the BFI can bestow, the Fellowship. Actor Michael Fassbender was on hand to present the prestigious prize to his collaborator and friend, Turner Prize-winning visual artist turned Academy Award-winning director/producer Steve McQueen, for his contribution to filmmaking.
