The 26th of February this year saw the culmination of this year’s award season at the 89th annual Academy Awards in Hollywood California, with host Jimmy Kimmel cracking up his assembled all-star audience. Apart from the surprise of ‘Moonlight’ winning best picture and the fiasco involved with announcing it, there were no major surprises at this year’s Oscars as the results generally mimicked those of the preceding award ceremonies, seeing ‘La La Land’ taking home the most statuettes with six (but by no means dominating), and ‘Moonlight’ winning three.
Although the bestowing of awards for artistry is completely subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win what, this is a chance for films and their filmmakers to be globally recognised for another great year of work so let’s see who the principal nominees and winners were this year;

So there you have it, ‘La La Land’ doesn’t quite sweep the board after its 14 nominations but goes away with six Oscars, despite making headlines for bizarrely losing the big one to ‘Moonlight’, who goes away with three awards itself. The acting categories play out as generally predicted, with Casey Affleck picking up best actor for our best film of the year ‘Manchester By the Sea’, but perhaps the most dubious decision was to make ‘Suicide Squad’ an Academy Award-winning film by giving it the prize for makeup and hairstyling.
