April

Not to be outdone by its preceding month, April proved to be an equally varied month and in particular for smaller releases, treating audiences to period dramas like World War II story The Zookeeper’s Wife and excellent edgy British costume drama Lady Macbeth—as well as a slew of top notch foreign language film including Park Chan-wook’s sexually-charged Korean period mystery The Handmaiden, Pablo Larraín’s lyrical and biographical Chilean crime drama Neruda, and Julia Ducournau’s provocative French horror and directorial debut Raw.

The first cinematic outing for Disney’s Marvel Studios this year came in the form of hugely anticipated sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as director James Gunn & co. had the daunting task of capturing the magic of the first film which introduced new levels of humour to the superhero genre, with the added pressure of audience expectation. The result, although not as fresh or memorable as the first film, was a critical success and an even bigger commercial one—setting up this merry band of galactic rogues on a collision course with the avengers and everyone else in the MCU in 2018’s upcoming ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.

A tough month for losses began with the passing of comedic titan and actor ‘Mr. Warmth’ himself Don Rickles (90) (Casino, Toy Story), as well fellow comedian/actor and celebrity sibling Charlie Murphy (57) (CB4, Chappelle’s Show). April also took from us veteran British actor Tim Pigott-Smith (70) (Clash of the Titans, V for Vendetta), American actor Clifton James (96) (Cool Hand Luke, Live and Let Die) and Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (73) (The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia).
