Mid-February once again meant the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) gathering the great and the good of British and global cinema in the ‘Big Smoke’, converging on the Royal Albert Hall for the second year in a row to recognise achievements in film at the 71st British Academy Film Awards.
In keeping with the social change sweeping through the industry the ever-present Stephen Fry bowed out of presenting duties and was replaced by Joanna Lumley, as the issue of sexual misconduct in Hollywood and female empowerment dominated the headlines—but there was also the small and subjective matter of awarding films and filmmakers for their achievements over the last 12 months.
Guillermo del Toro’s unique period romance fantasy concoction ‘The Shape of Water’ lead the field with 12 nominations, followed by ‘Darkest Hour’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’, which ultimately triumphed in terms of big wins—but in keeping with the rest of awards season so far there was no real front-runner or dominant force and the awards were spread around the field, so let’s breakdown all the nominees and winners this year.

So there you have it, the awards were spread out over a number of contenders with British representation faring well and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ taking home the big one. Once again we must stress that award shows are completely subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win what, ultimately this is a chance for films and their filmmakers to be recognised for another great year of work so congratulations to all the winners and nominees, as well as the many deserving films which were not even nominated.
Let us know what you think of the BAFTAs this year and what your picks were, here, on Twitter and Facebook.
