As we headed into Spring proper the varied slate of releases continued, as UK audiences were treated to Hollywood studio pictures like creature-feature Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson vehicle ‘Rampage‘ and John Krasinski’s memorable horror effort ‘A Quiet Place‘, as well as smaller fare like Todd Haynes’s latest ‘Wonderstruck‘ and Cory Finley’s impressive debut ‘Thoroughbreds‘, plus another memorable debut in Michael Pearce’s tense British drama ‘Beast‘ and Robin Campillo’s vibrant French AIDS activism drama ‘120 BPM (Beats Per Minute)‘.
The Beginning of the End

April 2018 was a momentous month in the history of comic-book cinema as it marked what is potentially the end of the first chapter in Marvel’s MCU, with the release of the third ‘Avengers’ film ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ proving by far Marvel’s most successful film to date, taking fourth place in the all-time global box-office list, just missing out on the $2.06 billion set by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. Although half of our heroes disintegrated before our very eyes, next year’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ will no doubt prove that death was just the beginning for many of them, but some will undoubtedly be hanging up their suits (and maybe hammers and shields) for good . . . leaving us curious about what the future holds for Marvel Studios.

April saw the passing among others of Oscar-winning Czech directing great Milos Forman (86) (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus) and Hollywood’s go-to military veteran R. Lee Ermey (74) (Full Metal Jacket, Se7en), plus American actor Harry Anderson (65) (Night Court, IT), diminutive star Verne Troyer (49) (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Bubble Boy) and prolific film and TV producer Paul Junger Witt (Golden Girls, Dead Poets Society).
