After another eclectic twelve months of cinema, film festivals, scandals and social change, everything came to a head in Hollywood on Sunday the 24th of February at the 91st Academy Awards, the biggest night of the year for the industry. As is becoming tradition, the event was preceded by some prerequisite media scandal, this year resulting in a rare hostless Oscars with the most diverse selection of nominees in recent memory.
With once again no clear front-runner the awards were evenly spread out, with Peter Farrelly’s racially-charged biographical American dramedy road movie ‘Green Book’ picking up the big one, in defiance of the oddsmakers who dubbed Alfonso Cuarón’s very personal Mexican period family drama ‘Roma’ the favourite, which itself took home best director, foreign language film and cinematography—making history for Netflix. Meanwhile the four acting awards were evenly spread between four different films, and provided only one real surprise.
Although all award shows are entirely subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win what or even be nominated, this is a chance for films and their filmmakers to be globally recognised for another great year of work, so let’s see who the big winners were this year.

So there it is, the awards were spread evenly with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ unexpectedly just about leading the field with four wins and ‘Green Book’ taking home best film, meanwhile ‘Roma’ made history for Netflix and took Alfonso Cuarón’s personal Oscar tally to four, and filmmaking veteran Spike Lee won his first for adapted screenplay for ‘BlacKkKlansman’.
The acting gongs provided only one (welcome) surprise as Olivia Colman took the prize for leading actress for ‘The Favourite’, while lead actor went to Rami Malek for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and supporting actor and actress went to Mahershala Ali for ‘Green Book’ and Regina King for ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ respectively. #TriviaTuesday: A cost-cutting insect-like suit was the early design for the alien hunter in 1987's 'Predator'—unsuccessfully worn by the character's first actor Jean-Claude Van Damme—but it was ditched for a now iconic Stan Winston design at twice the price. Money well spent. pic.twitter.com/pvbTmpgUIB
#TriviaTuesday: ‘Big Kahuna Burger’ is most certainly the fictional fast food of choice in the Tarantinoverse, appearing or referenced in 'Reservoir Dogs', 'From Dusk Till Dawn', 'Death Proof', 'Four Rooms', as well as its starring turn in 1994’s 'Pulp Fiction' of course. pic.twitter.com/k3xVsbDuA6
