The BAFTAs 2019

February once again saw the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) gather the great and the good of British and global cinema in London town, as they converged on the legendary Royal Albert Hall to recognise their achievements in film over the last twelve months at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards.

As Joanna Lumley hosted the proceedings for the second year in a row, this year once again saw an open field with no dominant front runner—although Yorgos Lanthimos’ unique English costume drama ‘The Favourite’ led the field with twelve nominations and took home the most awards with seven, including best actress for Olivia Colman and supporting actress for Rachel Weisz. Meanwhile Rami Malek nabbed the other acting nod for Queen biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and and Mahershala Ali best supporting actor for ‘Green Book’, while Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón picked up four awards for his very personal drama ‘Roma’, including best director and film.

Although we can endlessly and subjectively debate over who should have won what and who was ‘snubbed’ with the nominations to begin with, let’s celebrate all the films recognised this year as we recap the night’s big winners and nominees . . . and our own personal picks.

So there you have it, ‘The Favourite’ led the field with seven awards, while 2019 at the BAFTAs signalled a personal milestone for Alfonso Cuarón as he personally picked up four awards while making history for Netflix with ‘Roma’. Onward now to the final stops on the award season railway which culminates at the Academy Awards in two weeks, let’s see how their choices stack up with their British counterparts.
