Another eclectic and record-breaking twelve months of cinema—complete with all its festivals and releases, scandals and social change—culminated on Sunday evening in Hollywood California at the 92nd Academy Awards, the biggest night of the year for the industry. As is becoming tradition the event was preceded by some prerequisite media scandal and recrimination regarding the academy’s choices, while the show itself was once again a hostless affair.
A less diverse but no less impressive or deserving selection of nominees this year once again provided no clear front-runner, but were led by the likes of Todd Phillips’ stark super villain origin story ‘Joker’, Martin Scorsese’s latest mob masterpiece ‘The Irishman’, Quentin Tarantino’s singular ode to classic Hollywood ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ and tense Sam Mendes World War I frontier drama ‘1917’, a memorable quartet which racked up the bulk of the nominations. But it was Bong Joon-Ho’s South Korean class study and inequality black comedy which built on an already impressive awards season to take home the most golden statuettes including best director and the big one, making history as the first film not in the English language to win best picture in the show’s 92 year history.
Although all award shows are entirely subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win what or even be nominated, this is a chance for films and their filmmakers to be globally recognised for another great year of work, so let’s see who the big winners were this year.

So there it is! A night where the awards were spread evenly and went largely to script but with a few big surprises, which despite complaints about a lack of diversity and representation saw the academy bestow its biggest honour on a South Korean black comedy about class and equality, having given a black & white Mexican domestic drama the royal treatment last year—confirming that globalisation is alive and ready to thrive in Hollywood. Let us know what you think of the Oscar nominations and our picks this year by commenting here and on FilmPhonic at Facebook and Twitter.

#TriviaTuesday: A cost-cutting insect-like suit was the early design for the alien hunter in 1987's 'Predator'—unsuccessfully worn by the character's first actor Jean-Claude Van Damme—but it was ditched for a now iconic Stan Winston design at twice the price. Money well spent. pic.twitter.com/pvbTmpgUIB
#TriviaTuesday: ‘Big Kahuna Burger’ is most certainly the fictional fast food of choice in the Tarantinoverse, appearing or referenced in 'Reservoir Dogs', 'From Dusk Till Dawn', 'Death Proof', 'Four Rooms', as well as its starring turn in 1994’s 'Pulp Fiction' of course. pic.twitter.com/k3xVsbDuA6
