The BAFTAs 2020

Spread the love

The biggest night in the British film calendar came early this year when the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) gathered the great and the good of British and global cinema in London town in the second day of February, converging on the legendary Royal Albert Hall to recognise their achievements in film over the last twelve months at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards.

With the issue of diversity and representation once again hanging heavy in the air, host Graham Norton consolidated his BAFTA TV award duties by adding film to his repertoire, presenting an open field with no dominant front runner but with the likes of with Todd Phillips’ stark super villain origin story ‘Joker’, Martin Scorsese’s latest mob masterpiece ‘The Irishman’, Quentin Tarantino’s singular ode to classic Hollywood ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ and tense Sam Mendes World War I frontier drama ‘1917’ leading the nominations—with the latter picking up the most awards with 7, including the big one.

Although we can endlessly and subjectively debate over who should have won what and who was ‘snubbed’ with the nominations to begin with, let’s celebrate all the films recognised this year as we recap the night’s big winners and nominees . . . and our own personal picks.
