The culmination of the 2022 award season and biggest glitzy back-patting extravaganza for the film industry returned to Hollywood and the Dolby Theatre in full force this year after a scaled-back pandemic show in 2021, as the great and the good of mainstream and global cinema gathered on the last Sunday of March to award the achievements in cinema over the last difficult twelve months at the 94th edition of the Academy Awards.
The organisers and producers made good on their promise of a more entertaining and event packed ceremony this year, whether by design or happenstance, including a headline-grabbing slap heard across the world which for many overshadowed the entire evening. But there was also the small matter of awarding filmmakers for their achievements in film over the last twelve disruptive months for the industry and the world.
Although all award shows are subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win what or even be nominated, this is a chance for films and their makers to be globally recognised for another great year of work so let’s see who the principal nominees, big winners, and our personal picks are this year.

So there you have it, a fairly even spread with Sian Heder’s‘CODA’ coming in hot with Oscar voters at the finish line and winning all three awards for which it was nominated, including the big one. Meanwhile Denis Villeneuve’s‘Dune’ nabbed most of the technical awards and the acting headlines were grabbed by Will Smith and Jessica Chastain . . . in more ways than one. Let us know what you think of the Oscar winners and happenings this year, and if you agree with our picks by commenting here and on FilmPhonic at Facebook and Twitter.
#TriviaTuesday: A cost-cutting insect-like suit was the early design for the alien hunter in 1987's 'Predator'—unsuccessfully worn by the character's first actor Jean-Claude Van Damme—but it was ditched for a now iconic Stan Winston design at twice the price. Money well spent. pic.twitter.com/pvbTmpgUIB
#TriviaTuesday: ‘Big Kahuna Burger’ is most certainly the fictional fast food of choice in the Tarantinoverse, appearing or referenced in 'Reservoir Dogs', 'From Dusk Till Dawn', 'Death Proof', 'Four Rooms', as well as its starring turn in 1994’s 'Pulp Fiction' of course. pic.twitter.com/k3xVsbDuA6
