After one of the most tumultuous years in recent Hollywood history thanks to 2023’s WGA & SAG-AFTRA writers & actors strike and an industry in general perilous flux—not to mention the controversies surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) in recent years—the year’s first big film & TV awards ceremony took place this Sunday as the 81st edition of the Golden Globe Awards rolled into tinseltown.
A difficult year at the box office, in boardrooms, and on the streets was defined in cinema terms by the “Barbenheimer” cultural and media phenomenon which was reflected in the nominations this year with ‘Barbie’ securing 9 and ‘Oppenheimer’ garnering 8, whilst films like Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and Yorgos Lanthimos‘ ‘Poor Things’ also made an impact. So we recap the big film award nominees and winners this year . . . plus our personal picks.

As usual let’s all remember that film criticism is subjective and we all have our opinions on who should win what and why, the important thing is that the majority of the nominees at these shows deserve recognition for great work done, but no more than the many who often do not feature at all.
