2024’s award season railway made its customary penultimate major stop in the “Big Smoke” on Sunday evening for the biggest night in the British film calendar, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) gathered the great and the good of global cinema and headed south of the river for the second year in a row, congregating in their new regular venue on the South Bank and in the Royal Festival Hall for the 77th edition of the British Academy Film Awards.
Once again the BAFTA nomination patterns generally echoed those of other major award shows this season but as always with a few major home-grown divergences, as Christopher Nolan’s epic Promethean biopic ‘Oppenheimer’ led the field with 13 nominations and took home several gold masks including the big one by nabbing best film, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ gloriously bizarre and devilishly droll rebirth and female emancipation odyssey ‘Poor Things’ which secured 11 nominations and won several awards including best actress for Emma Stone.
As always although we can endlessly and subjectively debate over who should have won what and who was “snubbed” with the nominations to begin with, let’s celebrate all the films recognised over the last twelve months as we recap the night’s big winners and nominees . . . and our own personal picks.
