2026’s award season railway made its customary penultimate major stop in the UK capital on Sunday evening for the biggest night in the British film calendar, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) gathered the great and the good of global cinema and headed south of the river for the third year in a row, congregating in their new regular venue on the South Bank in the Royal Festival Hall for the 79th edition of the British Academy Film Awards.
Once again the BAFTA nomination patterns generally echoed those of other major award shows this season but as always with a few major home-grown divergences, as Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’ led the field with 14 nominations and took home the big one, closely followed by Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’, Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’ and Josh Safdie’s ‘Marty Supreme’.
As always although we can endlessly and subjectively debate over who should have won what and who was “snubbed” by the nominations to begin with, let’s celebrate all the films recognised over the last twelve months as we recap the night’s big winners and nominees . . . and our own personal picks.
