12 New Films to Watch this Year

This year has already seen a wide range of memorable and entertaining new cinema releases, from Oscar winners like 12 Years a Slave and Dallas Buyers Club to Blockbusters like The Lego Movie and Godzilla, we give you 12 films to look out for in the second half of 2014 in the UK.

 

 

1: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- (July)

The Sequel to the highly entertaining 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes is set a decade after those events and sees the return of the Super-chimp Caesar and his apes, this time Humanity’s dominance on Earth is threatened and so it our species itself.

Directed By Matt Reeves and Starring Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke and more.

 

 

 

 2- Guardians of the Galaxy- (July)

The latest epic from the Marvel comic-book universe features Christ Pratt as Star-Lord, a galactic rogue, hunted by a powerful villain and forced to form an unlikely team of dangerous characters from all corners of space to defeat the bad guys and save the universe, promises to be a funny and epic summer blockbuster.

Directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Benicio Del Toro and many more.

 

 

 

3- Two Days, One Night (Deux Jours, une Nuit)- (August)

One of the official French selections for the Cannes Film Festival, Two Days One Night is directed by the Dardenne brothers and stars Oscar winner Marion Cotillard as a working mother forced to convince her colleagues to reject their bonuses so she can keep her job, this promises to be a moving film with themes of injustice and the consequences of capitalism.

Directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne and starring Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione and more.

 

 

 

4- Million Dollar Arm- (August)

A Disney feel-good family offering based on a true story starring Jon Hamm as a sport agent who convinces talented Indian Cricketers to play Major League Baseball.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi and Alan Arkin amongst others.

 

 

 

5- The German Doctor (Wakolda)- (August)

Based on a true story of an Argentinean family in 1960 who innocently take in a German doctor who turns out to be Josef Mengele, a former SS captain and physician at Auschwitz concentration camp and one of the most wanted criminals in the world.

Directed by Lucía Puenzo and starring Àlex Brendemühl and Natalia Oreiro amongst others.

 

 

 

6- A Most Wanted Man- (September)

In one of his last performances before his untimely death early this year, the great Philip Seymour Hoffman stars with an impressive cast as a German agent tracking down an illegal Chechen immigrant with suspected Terrorist links in Europe. Based on a John le Carré novel this promises to be a tense psychological thriller.

Directed by Anton Corbijn and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and many more.

 

 

 

7- Interstellar- (November)

Director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) goes galactic as he tackles profound sci-fi along the line of 2001: A Space Odyssey, humanity are forced by events on Earth to use a wormhole to seek out new reaches of the universe. Featuring an all-star cast and with an acclaimed director, Interstellar is one of the most anticipated films of the year.

Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine amongst many others.

 

 

 

8- Paddington- (November)

The classic children’s character gets the big screen treatment with the Bear himself as a computer-generated character but set in real world London, a Peruvian bear travels to London only to get lost in Paddington station and taken in by a kind family. Featuring an all-star British cast and Nicole Kidman and the voice of Colin Firth as Paddington himself.

Directed by Paul King and starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Sally Hawkins amongst many others.

 

 

 

9- Black Sea- (December)

Directed by Kevin Macdonald and starring Jude Law as a former Navy man convinced by a shadowy backer to search the bottom of the Black Sea and find a lost submarine full of gold.

10- Dumb and Dumber To- (December)

The Farrelly brothers bring us the sequel to the 90s comedy classic with the reunion of the most moronic duo in movie history Lloyd and Harry, the 2 idiots set out on an adventure to find Harry’s illegitimate child with surely hilarious consequences.

Directed by the Farrelly brothers and starring Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Kathleen Turner and more.

 

 

 

11- A Most Violent Year- (December)

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain star in a gritty thriller set in early 80s New York in one of the most violent years of a historically violent city, the film follows the story of an immigrant and his family trying to make their way in a climate that offers opportunities but threatens dire consequences.

Directed by J.C. Chandor and starring Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain and David Oyelowo amongst others.

 

 

 

12- The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies- (December)

The long-awaited conclusion to the Hobbit film trilogy is surely the most anticipated film of the year with the original battle for middle-earth reaching its climax, after waking the sleeping Dragon the peoples of middle-earth face the wrath of Smaug and rising dark forces with epic consequences.

Directed by Peter Jackson and starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage amongst many others.
