A talented but troubled inner-city kid is recruited by a high-level independent British Spy organization to stop a megalomaniacal tech-industry billionaire from bringing havoc to an unsuspecting world.

Writer/director Matthew Vaughn brings his Kick-Ass sensibilities to the British Espionage table while dragging the established “Gentleman Spy” concept from Bond and The Avengers UK 60s TV series, shooting and stabbing into the 21st Century.

Once again Vaughn defies expectation of the genre and of its characters through clever casting and an old-fashioned outrageous world-domination narrative mixed with extremely modern action set-pieces and buckets of unashamed graphic violence.

Make no mistake though Kingsman is also an extremely funny flick and the violence is layered with irreverent comedy, epitomized by a spectacularly orchestrated scene of carnage towards the end of the movie.

There is thin sliver of a moral tale within the action where the social-class system is dissected somewhat, but despite the heavy use of British class clichés and stereotypes, the action and entertainment help the film to glide over rather than trip on them as most modern films tend to.

Although Kingsman may not have some of the charm and charisma that Kick-Ass certainly did, if you’re a fan of Kick-Ass then this is a must see for you, however the non-stop graphic violence throughout the film may not be for everyone and you should certainly not expect a profound movie experience or a gritty spy drama from this film.

Samuel L. Jackson’s lisping violence-averse genius super-villain alone is worth the price of a ticket, if you’re looking for a break from all the gripping but austere dramas in the lead-up to the Oscars then Kingsman is a fun, all-action 21st century British Spy romp you shouldn’t miss.
