The 22nd of February 2015 will see the year’s awards season come to a climax at the 87th annual Academy Awards in Hollywood California, although all award shows are subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win what, this is a chance for films and their filmmakers to be globally recognized for another great year of work so let’s see who the principal nominees are this year;

Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the field with 9 nominations each while The Imitation Game and Boyhood also make a strong showing, perhaps surprisingly the late entrant American Sniper from director Clint Eastwood has made a shock grab for 6 nominations, particularly dubious since the film has not yet been under general release in the US or any other country for that matter.
Although we don’t argue that the majority of the nominees deserve recognition, we strongly disagree with the decisions to snub some of the films and performers that have produced the some of the best work this year.
The “overlooking” of one of the films of the year Nightcrawler continues this awards season, the Academy though has gone one step further in failing to nominate one of the lead performances of the year from Jake Gyllenhaal, something not even the BAFTAs or Globes has dared to do.
We fully expected Interstellar to be snubbed for major awards given the Academy’s nature and the type of film it is, not to mention how it has divided critical opinion, we certainly did not expect The Lego Movie to not be recognized as one of the best animated feature films last year.
Let’s see how things play out on the night, we’ve given our picks on who we think should win but there are as always many films in 2014 that are not nominated and deserve recognition.
