The world’s greatest Superheroes reunite to protect the Earth from the menace of a rogue A.I. program that threatens humanity as we know it, as “The Avengers” combat the powerful “Ultron” and his super-recruits they will have to face the consequences of past actions which threaten to destroy the team and doom humanity to extinction.

In his final Marvel movie involvement for the foreseeable future, writer/director Joss Whedon manages to wrangle the already large selection of superstar egos both on and off the screen while adding an array of new ones in a predictably spectacular blockbuster to follow his own 2012 smash-hit ‘The Avengers’.

As a spectacle ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ does not disappoint despite some questionable CGI in the opening action sequence, but there is a clear effort to add dimension to this universe with the weaving of multiple storylines and character arcs that move the story to a darker place, this film is a cautionary tale about humanity’s increasingly symbiotic relationship with technology and a warning about unabated scientific discovery, as much as it is a human drama and a bizarre love-story, all of course added to the action elements that made ‘The Avengers’ so successful in 2012.

It’s ironic then that this legitimate attempt to add depth to the “Avengers” universe has actually made this film a less enjoyable cinematic experience than its predecessor, apart from a couple of one-liners there is far less of the charm and humour that we enjoyed from ‘The Avengers’, ultimately Whedon tackles too much to effectively condense into the story while maintaining an engaging pace and tone.

Avengers: Age of Ultron’ is not as effective as a standalone film considering the limitations of a narrative that bleeds into the rest of the Marvel “Cinematic Universe”, it’s a story that becomes increasingly convoluted within a universe that’s increasingly complicated and intertwined.

 The Bottom Line…

While lacking some of the simple charm of 2012’s ‘The Avengers’ and not without its “issues”, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ is a noble attempt to add depth to Marvel’s “Cinematic Universe” and an action-packed visual extravaganza that makes us wonder what’s next for the world’s greatest team.

The next major stage of Marvel’s “Cinematic Universe” begins with writer/director Joss Whedon bringing together several of the world’s greatest Superheroes to stop the evil “Loki” and his galactic overlord from destroying the Earth and enslaving humanity, a surprisingly funny all-action adventure blockbuster and one of the highest grossing films of all time.

Directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson among others.
