#1:

‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)

thedarkknight_146x216Top5ShF-Articlepic05The second installment in writer/director Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy sees the “Caped Crusader” face the consequences of his “rescue” of Gotham City from dark forces in ‘Batman Begins’, as the ultimate “agent of chaos” emerges to terrorize Gotham ‘The Dark Knight’ will pay a high price to save the city from anarchy and destruction.

With a cast to rival any film in history and outstanding performances throughout, Nolan ramps up the tension throughout to create a dark and gritty tone that combines with an accomplished story and spectacular action sequences, the result is a movie experience that has elevated the entire genre and triumphed spectacularly both critically and at the box-office.

Superhero films generally live or die on the strength of the villain and the late Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance is unhinged and unpredictable enough to bamboozle even the most cynical audiences, you never know what’s around the corner and think about it, by the end of the film 2 of the principal “good” characters are dead and the hero is public enemy number 1.

When you add the moody and epic score by Hans Zimmer, ‘The Dark Knight’  is not only the greatest ever superhero film but one of the finest movies of the last 20 years.

Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart among others.
