2015YIF_ArticlePic15The summer months typically signify a slew of big releases and the start of this summer was no exception, we were treated to big comedies like Melissa McCarthy’s action/comedy Spy’ and the animation prequel Minions’ as well as the inevitable movie version of the popular TV hit Entourage.

For those looking for more subtle fare there were also smaller releases like the Michael Fassbender immigrant Indie western Slow West and Ian McKellen’s fascinating new take on Sherlock Holmes in Mr. Holmes’, as well the gripping Indonesian genocide documentary The Look of Silence’.

2015YIF_ArticlePic16Not many would’ve predicted that the 4th installment in the “Jurassic” series of films, and one which largely recycles the core elements of its predecessors, would become the biggest box-office success story of 2015 and the 3rd highest grossing film of all time, taking $1.6 billion worldwide thus far.

But a combination of a fun adventurous story with plenty of humour and an effective marketing campaign, plus the irresistible charms of its star Chris Pratt, guaranteed that Jurassic World’ would make an almighty mark on the year and confirm that people still can’t get enough of dinosaurs running wild.

Those We Lost: Titans of the Industry

2015YIF_ArticlePic17The start of summer also signaled the loss of some major players from different parts of the movie industry, we saw the passing of the irrepressible screen legend, ultimate movie villain and all around remarkable human being that was the great Sir Christopher Lee (93) (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Dracula: Prince of Darkness).

We also tragically lost the masterful Oscar-wining composer James Horner (61) (Braveheart, Apollo 13) in a pane crash as well as producer and long time Sylvester Stallone collaborator Robert Chartoff (81) (Rocky, Raging Bull).
