The end of summer usually signals the beginning of interesting award-contender autumnal releases, and this year was no exception. From the excellent Emily Blunt US drug-war drama/thriller ‘Sicario’ and Ridley Scott’s return to top from with refreshing Sci-fi drama ‘The Martian’, to the biographical disaster drama ‘Everest’ and Tom Hardy’s double-duty performance in the Krays biopic ‘Legend’.
The world’s filmmakers big and small, plus the global media, converged as always on the “The Bride of the Sea” in September for the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, “La Biennale”, which meant 10 days of screenings, premieres, photocalls, red carpets, awards and general appreciation for the craft of filmmaking.Image source: Getty Images
Aside from exclusive screenings, star-studded press conferences and glamorous premieres, the closing night bestowed, among others, the prestigious “Golden Lion” award to one lucky filmmaker. Here are this year’s big winners;

The end of summer meant the departure of British director John Guillermin (89) (The Towering Inferno, Death on the Nile) and veteran actor Dean Jones (84) (The Love Bug, Beethoven), as well as Italian B-movie director Mario Caiano (82) (Shanghai Joe, Napoli spara!).
