In a declining Scottish mining town, a proud unemployed man struggling to feed his family is seduced by the offer of a lucrative but illegal bare-knuckle fight organized by the local crime-lord, he soon finds that the struggle for his integrity is just as challenging as the fight itself.
Even though ‘The Big Man’ features only a few minutes of training and 1 actual fight, that fight happens to be one of the most brutal and realistic displays of fist-fighting on film and perhaps the most realistic depiction of bare-knuckle boxing in a drama.
The action takes advantage of Liam Neeson’s background as an accomplished youth amateur boxer in Ireland as well that of his opponent played by Rab Affleck, a former pro-boxer and real bare-knuckle fighter, the result is impressive with Neeson’s skills in full display, from his stiff left jab and the way he holds his hands to some impressive footwork for a 6 foot 4 actor.
Directed by David Leland and starring Liam Neeson, Joanne Whalley and Billy Connolly among others.
#TriviaTuesday: A cost-cutting insect-like suit was the early design for the alien hunter in 1987's 'Predator'—unsuccessfully worn by the character's first actor Jean-Claude Van Damme—but it was ditched for a now iconic Stan Winston design at twice the price. Money well spent. pic.twitter.com/pvbTmpgUIB
