The Thieving Magpie in ‘A Clockwork Orange’ (1971)

Warner Bros.

Like many Stanley Kubrick films, ‘A Clockwork Orange’ has no shortage of classical classics to pick from; but it’s the overture to Gioachino Rossini’s opera “La Gazza Ladra” (The Thieving Magpie) that seals this bizarre show for us.

We hear this wonderfully whimsical piece with its dramatic crescendo several times in the film, but nowhere is it more memorable and effective than when Alex disciplines his scheming “Droogs” with a bit of the ole’ ultra-violence.

Directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Malcolm McDowell, Warren Clarke and Patrick Magee among others.

Genre: Crime, Drama, Sci-Fi
