This racially charged Oscar-winning drama might not seem like an immediate choice for this list, but Norman Jewison’s bold and groundbreaking mystery is a precursor to the entire sub-genre. Starring Rod Steiger as the racist police chief of a southern town and Sidney Poitier as a visiting black detective, forced to work together to solve the mystery of a local murder, and in the process develop a begrudging respect as they navigate the waters of a racially hostile town.

Directed by Norman Jewison and starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger and  Warren Oates among others.
