The shortest month in the film calendar once again proved to be one of the most eventful, featuring the final stops in the awards season railway which culminated in the biggest nights in British and global cinema. February also saw an eclectic group of UK cinema releases; from socio-political biographical dramas like ‘Trumbo‘ and ‘Concussion‘ as well as horrors of varying quality like ‘Bone Tomahawk‘ and ‘The Forest’. But February 2016 will be remembered as the month where the r-rated superhero movie became a sub-genre unto itself, with the outrageous and hilarious ‘Deadpool‘ taking audiences and the box-office by storm.

February also meant the “big one”, the most grandiose night of the global film calendar in the form of the 88th Academy Awards in Hollywood California. Although awards for artistry are completely subjective, for better or worse they do matter and can make careers, not to mention celebrating achievements in filmmaking and giving publicity to films that normally wouldn’t get much, so here are some of the night’s notable winners;
Best Picture
Best Director
