Retrospective 2016 – A Year in Film

Spread the love

2016 has been a another solid and eclectic year for film, without a single title dominating at the box-office or in critical acclaim; from comic-book titans like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and Captain America: Civil War’ to outrageous comedies like ‘The Nice Guys’ and ‘David Brent: Life on the Road’, from powerful dramas like ‘Spotlight’ and ‘Hell or High Water’ to quirky indies like ‘Captain Fantastic’ and ‘Swiss Army Man’.

FilmPhonic chronicles the people, events and films that have shaped the movie world in the last 12 months, let’s hope 2017 has at least as much to offer.

2016yif_articlepic1Once again January proved to be one of the very best months for cinema releases as British audiences caught up with the US viewing public, getting the chance to see several strong contenders for the awards season which culminates at the Academy Awards.

As usual it meant some of the most original and inventive films of the year in one month, this year it meant the return of Alejandro González Iñárritu to award-collecting duties with his Leonardo DiCaprio passion-project The Revenant and the excellent investigative journalism drama Spotlight’, as well as the incredibly moving little indie Room’ and several other films that would make waves at award shows.

Those We Lost

2016 could easily be described as an “annus horribilis” for the passing of film, TV and music stars, and sadly but inevitably we lost people who made an impact on the movie industry, so we pay tribute to some of those that twenty-sixteen took from us.

2016yif_articlepic3January saw the passing among others, of beloved British actor Alan Rickman (69) (Die Hard, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) after a short battle with cancer, as well as American TV & film actor Abe Vigoda (94) (The Godfather, Look Who’s Talking) and Aussie music impresario and the producer behind ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Grease’ Robert Stigwood (81).

But January 2016 will most likely be defined by the huge and unexpected loss of singular music legend and actor David Bowie (The Man Who Fell to Earth, Labyrinth), who passed away at the age of 69 after his own battle with cancer, but who left us the way he lived his entire life, doing it his way.
