‘The Joker’ in ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)

Warner Bros.

No one has described Batman’s arch nemesis better than Wayne butler ‘Alfred’ when he uttered the words “some men just want to watch the world burn”, and armed with this ethos the late  Heath Ledger took the comic-book baddie to a new level with his portrayal of arguably the most iconic super villain of all time, elevating an entire cinematic genre on the way to a posthumous Oscar win.

It takes an accomplished screenplay and a special performance to make a modern comic-book villain unpredictable and truly unsettling, but Gotham’s self-professed ‘agent of chaos’ helps to make Christopher Nolan’s 2008 masterpiece arguably the best superhero movie to date (Nolan haters relax, it’s an opinion). Ledger captures the unhinged essence of an iconic character but somehow grounds it in reality, making it very large clown shoes to fill for the actors who have and will continue to try and wear them in the future.

Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart among others.

Genre: Comic-book, Action, Crime, Drama
