Retrospective 2017 – A Year in Film

Spread the love

February

Short Month, Long Stride

The shortest month of the year as usual proved to be one of the most eventful, as UK audiences were given an eclectic mix of releases which included the rest of the award contenders headed towards the industry’s biggest night. Along with Oscar hopeful dramas like Fences and Hidden Figures, as well as eventual ‘best picture’ winner Moonlight, British audiences were treated to idiosyncratic German comedy/drama Toni Erdmann and the second film in LEGO’s own cinematic universe The LEGO Batman Movie.

A per tradition the biggest night in the British film calendar took place in February as the awards season express made one of its final stops in London town for the 70th edition of the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), here are some of the notable winners in 2017;

The biggest night in the British film calendar was soon followed in February by the biggest (and most subjective) event in the global film industry, the 89th Academy Awards in Hollywood California. Following controversies about diversity in previous years the Academy made sure to be seen to address certain issues, with the only hiccup coming during the botched awarding of the night’s biggest prize.

Once again we can endlessly debate who should have won what and whether any of it matters, but the Oscars can make careers and give publicity to films that normally wouldn’t get much, not to mention celebrating legitimate achievements in filmmaking, so here are some of 2017’s notable winners;

Best Picture

Best Director

Best Cinematography

Actor and Actress in a Leading Role

and

Best Supporting Actor and Actress

and

Best Screenplay (Original)

Best Screenplay (Adapted)

The second month of the year brought the loss of British actor and former Bond ‘Q’ Alec McCowen (91) (Never Say Never Again, The Age of Innocence) as well as American TV actors Richard Hatch (71) (Battlestar Galactica, The Streets of San Francisco) and Warren Frost (91) (Twin Peaks, Matlock)—plus the unexpected passing of genre film favourite Bill Paxton (61) (Aliens, Tombstone).
