March

The March Mix

As always the first month of spring brought UK audiences a healthy mix of releases, from Hollywood blockbusters like CGI-heavy creature-feature Kong: Skull Island and sci-fi Manga adaptation Ghost in the Shell, to action/comedy 70s exploitation tribute Free Fire and Jordan Peele’s racially charged socially reflective drama/horror Get Out. March also brought some foreign language treats to British moviegoers, including Paul Verhoeven’s gripping and provocative French thriller Elle and the foreign language Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi’s Iranian drama The Salesman.

End of an Era… probably

March also effectively signalled the end of the road for the original ‘X-Men’ cinematic franchise launched by Bryan Singer in 2000, as  Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart bowed out and rode into the sunset with their respective mutants in the memorable Logan—an R-rated road-trip superhero pseudo-Western with a strong father/son element and a sombre but charming tone, which gave its stars a most appropriate send-off. Time will tell though if ‘claws’ and ‘wheels’ are to be seen again, perhaps if a certain Mr. ‘Deadpool’ has anything to say about it.

Those We Lost

Once again March saw losses for both the film and television industry, with the passing of Puerto Rican actress Míriam Colón (80) (Scarface, Lone Star) and celebrated film journalist and part-time actor Robert Osborne (84) (Turner Classic Movies), as well as American actor Lawrence Montaigne (86) (The Great Escape, Star Trek) and prolific Cuban actor Tomas Milian (84) (The Agony and the Ecstasy, Traffic).
