Retrospective 2018- A Year in Film

Spread the love

February

Once again the shortest month of the year proved to be one of the most eventful, as UK audiences were treated to an eclectic mix of releases led by the rest of the year’s major award contenders, including Guillermo del Toro’s eventual Oscar-winner The Shape of Water, Greta Gerwig’s quirky coming-of-age dramedy Lady Bird and Tony Harding biopic I, Tonya, plus plus Daniel Day-Lewis‘ supposed final film ‘Phantom Thread’ and bleak Russian drama Loveless.

But the month, and arguably much of the year, was defined by the comic-book superhero blockbuster which became a global cultural phenomenon, as Marvel Studios contributed to closing the race gap in Hollywood and upped minority representation in tent-pole filmmaking with the first African-American led MCU film ‘Black Panther.
