Academy Awards 2021

Spread the love

oscarsbanner1After the most disruptive twelve months of cinema in living memory, the award season express made its final stop (literally) of the year on the last Sunday in April as the 93rd Academy Awards rolled into Tinseltown. Bucking this year’s award show trend of hybrid ceremonies and virtual acceptances the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences delivered a semi-traditional but socially-distanced show in multiple locations, including Union Station in Los Angeles.

An understandably undersubscribed and fairly open field—which was almost exclusively steaming in nature and more representative than ever thanks to the Academy’s revised rules for eligibility—saw David Fincher’s making-of-Kane biopic ‘Mank’ lead the nominations followed evenly by the likes of Chloé Zhao’s soulful road movie meditation on modern America ‘Nomadland’, Florian Zeller’s heartbreaking British portrait of dementia ‘The Father’, and Lee Isaac Chung’s touching working-class American family drama and Korean immigrant tale ‘Minari’, with Zhao making history and ultimately taking home some of the night’s biggest prizes.

Although all award shows are entirely subjective and we can endlessly debate over who should win what or even be nominated, this is a chance for films and their filmmakers to be globally recognised for another great year of work, so let’s see who the nominees, big winners, and our own personal picks were this year.

So there it is, ‘Nomadland’ just about leads an open field with three big wins and makes history along the way. Arguably the most compromised and bizarre twelve months in film history comes to a close at the gold-plated spiritual home of  the industry, an industry which is forever changed by the preceding year and set to be fundamentally transformed in the months and years to come.
