The BAFTAs 2022

Spread the love

After a majorly disrupted two years for the film industry and a hybrid, largely virtual 2021 awards season, global cinema returns in full force to the “Big Smoke” as the golden statue express made its penultimate major stop in London this weekend for the biggest night in the British film calendar, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) gathered the great and the good of British and global cinema at the Royal Albert Hall for the 75th edition of the British Academy Film Awards.

Once again the BAFTA nomination patterns echoed those of other major award shows this season, but as always with a few major divergences and surprises. Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi/fantasy adaptation ‘Dune’ led the field with 11 nominations while Netflix made their mark with Jane Campion’s frontier period drama ‘The Power of the Dog’ racking up 9 and films like ‘Don’t Look Up’ and ‘Passing’ adding to the streaming giant’s hefty total tally, meanwhile there was plenty of British interest with the likes of Kenneth Branagh’s personal portrait of the place of his birth ‘Belfast’ and 25th Bond film ‘No Time to Die’ getting their recognition.

Although we can endlessly and subjectively debate over who should have won what and who was “snubbed” with the nominations to begin with, let’s celebrate all the films recognised over the last bizarre twelve months as we recap the night’s big winners and nominees . . . and our own personal picks.
