February saw a mix Oscar-contender UK releases like the powerful biographical MLK Alabama march film ‘Selma’ as well as big-budget action crime flick ‘Focus’ and Jennifer Aniston’s contemporary human drama ‘Cake’, but the month primarily was a culmination of the awards season with 2 of the biggest nights in the industry taking place.

The road to the Oscars continued with the British equivalent taking place in glitzy central London with the 68th edition of the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), some notable winners were;

Although awards for artistry are completely subjective, for better or worse they do matter and can make careers, not to mention celebrating achievements in filmmaking and giving publicity to films that normally wouldn’t get much. As always, the awards season culminated in the biggest night of the year for the movie industry with the 87th annual Academy Awards in Hollywood, here are some of the night’s notable winners;

February meant the loss of iconic ‘Star Trek’ actor and “Geek God” Leonard Nimoy (83) from a pulmonary disease as well as French actor Louis Jordan (93) (Octopussy, Gigi).
