As the mercury rises, so does the volume of releases and July meant several big-budget blockbusters including the return of Tom Cruise’s agent Hunt in ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’ and the nostalgia-packed latest “Arnie” cyborg CGI romp ‘Terminator Genisys’, as well as the surprisingly entertaining latest addition to the Marvel cinematic universe ‘Ant-Man‘.
We were also treated to 2 brilliant documentaries with the harrowing photojournalism chronicle ‘The Salt of the Earth’ and the captivating Amy Winehouse doc ‘Amy‘, not to mention one of the very best films of the year in the form of Disney-Pixar’s brilliantly inventive animation ‘Inside Out‘.
Con 2015
July was time as always for one of the biggest film events on the calendar, the annual San Diego Comic-Con, this once humble comic book convention has become an international media gathering where top filmmakers, stars and film studios come to talk to fans about some of the biggest upcoming fantasy, sci-fi and comic book releases.

20th Century Fox made their presence felt at Comic-con this year with their Marvel Comics productions, kicking off with perhaps the funniest panel of the year officially unveiling Ryan Reynolds as the trash-talking mercenary superhero “Deadpool” as well as the supporting cast and 1st time director Tim Miller.

X-Men: Apocalypse

Fox followed and virtually overlapped the ‘Deadpool’ panel with the one for ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ featuring one of the largest casts ever assembled on a Comic-con stage plus director Bryan Singer, the established stars of this new generation Michael Fassbender,James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence were flanked by so many youngsters they looked like teachers in a high-school class picture.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Not to be outdone, Warner Bros. flexed their DC Comics muscle with a panel and new trailer for ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, with Henry Cavill returning as the “Man of Steel” and the birth of the “Batfleck” with Ben Affleck donning the Dark Knight’s cowl for the first time, they were joined on stage by director Zack Snyder and an impressive supporting cast featuring the likes of Holly Hunter and Jeremy Irons among others.

Suicide Squad

The “bad guys” also rode into town with a very short and moderately sweet visit by the cast of ‘Suicide Squad’ directly from the set and with over a year to go until its release there were understandably no teasers or trailers on show, there was however is a slightly confrontational speech from director David Ayer that sounded like the beginning of a rap-style media feud with Marvel comics.

Needless to say ‘Star Wars’ has always had a considerable presence at comic-con from both the studio and fan side of things, but 2015 took things to a new level as the might of the Lucasfilm/Disney promotional machine rolled into town culminating in an impressive cast & crew panel for perhaps the most anticipated film of all time.

Those We Lost

This July meant the passing, among others, of big-time Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub (77) (The Karate Kid, Ocean’s Eleven) as well as veteran British actor Roger Rees (71) (Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Frida). We also lost Egyptian screen legend and larger-than-life character Omar Sharif (83) (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago).
