August
High Summer Mix

The final summer month provided a mixed bag both in terms of content and quality, we were subjected to disappointments like Adam Sandler’s video game alien attack action/comedy ‘Pixels’ and the critically savaged reboot of ‘Fantastic Four’, and more entertaining fare like Guy Ritchie’s cold war spy romp ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ and the N.W.A. biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton’ as well as American media darling Amy Schumer’s irreverent comedy ‘Trainwreck’.
August also provided a few pleasant surprises in the form indie gems like the fascinating isolationist cinephile documentary ‘The Wolfpack’ and actor Joel Edgeton’s directorial debut with creepy mystery/thriller ‘The Gift’.
Those We Lost

August saw the passing of British film & TV director Jack Gold (85) (The Medusa Touch, Escape from Sobibor) and British film & TV actor George Cole (90) (Minder, Cleopatra). We also lost the revolutionary writer/director and horror master Wes Craven (76) (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream) to brain cancer.
