#5:

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

20th Century Fox

thedaytheearth1An early seminal Sci-fi classic and one of the 1st to break through the confines of a “B-movie” genre; director Robert Wise (West Side Story, The Sound of Music) tells the story of an alien and his giant robot, who land on Earth threatening planetary destruction if humanity doesn’t accept absolute peace.

‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ may look dated enough to require the underwhelming 2008 Keanu Reeves remake, but the story of man’s destructive nature, boldly told in Sci-fi form, still resonates today and was all the more power at the post World War II & early Cold-War time when it was made.

Directed by Robert Wise and starring Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal and Hugh Marlowe among others.

Genre: Sci-fi, Drama
