2016yif_articlepic8The beginning of spring brought another month of varied releases for UK audiences; from comedies like the Coen Brothers period piece Hail, Caesar!’ and crowd-pleasing biopic Eddie the Eagle’, to tense horror/thrillers ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ and ‘The Witch’, as well as yet another delightful Disney animation in the form of ‘Zootropolis’.

Justice is Served

2016yif_articlepic9March 2017 was the moment when DC jumped into the comic-book “superteam” fray, with a blockbuster epic billed as the battle of the world’s most famous caped crusaders, but proved to be the gateway film into DC’s own “cinematic universe”, bringing them late into the game of expanding and intertwined superhero franchises and pitting them directly against Marvel.

Critics and fans alike gave Zack Snyder’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ a distinctly mixed reception, citing narrative issues and an unappealing tone. For us the effort was no doubt flawed and slightly disappointing but a solid enough blockbuster with promise for the future, one which is set in stone for the near future and promises to expand the already inflated world of comic-book movies, starting with the ‘Wonder Woman’ solo movie in June.

Those We Lost

2016yif_articlepic10March was a another tough month in terms of losing legends from the large & small screens and on both sides of the Atlantic; the US lost celebrated comedic actor/writer Garry Shandling (66) (The Larry Sanders Show, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as well as veteran actor and SAG president Ken Howard (71) (Michael Clayton, J. Edgar) and Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke (69) (The Miracle Worker, Valley of the Dolls). Meanwhile here in Blighty we lost legendary diminutive comedic actor Ronnie Corbett (85) (The Two Ronnies, Fierce Creatures) and actress Adrienne Corri (85) (Doctor Zhivago, A Clockwork Orange).
