Top 5 Movie Maniacs

Spread the love

Whether victims of severe personality disorders or good old-fashioned psychos, schizos and maniacs, the criminally unhinged have been morbidly captivating and fascinating audiences since the dawn of cinema. Now to celebrate James McAvoy’s entry into the fray with M. Night Shyamalan’s split personality horror/thriller ‘Split’, we break down our Top 5 most memorable movie lunatics.

#5:

‘Annie Wilkes’ in ‘Misery’ (1990)

20th Century Fox

The first entry on our list proves that when it comes to crazy, the girls can truly hang with the boys, featuring an Oscar-winning performance from Kathy Bates as an unhinged wolf in sheep’s clothing. A violent and obsessive split personality in the body of a demure middle-aged nurse, who takes fate into her own hands when her incapacitated favourite author unexpectedly ends up on her remote doorstep.

‘Misery’ might not have the bloodlust of some other “psycopath” movies and ‘Annie Wilkes’ may not boast the macabre résumé of some of her contemporaries, but the plausibility of the story combined with an unsettling character, which menancingly starts to come apart at the seams to reveal an unlikely monster, makes this one of the very best Stephen King film adaptions to date and a worthy addition to our list… not to mention a certain ankle scene which is seared into our memory forever.

Directed by Rob Reiner and starring James Caan, Kathy Bates and Lauren Bacall among others.

Genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller
